I'm
from a Botting family within the UK, having
been born in Birmingham to an English family
but with some distant Scottish connections

Africa and Canada?
Thank
you very much for any information you can
provide.

Luke's
inquiry could be of considerable interest to
many Family who are thinking generally about
their Botting Family origins, and
particularly the spread of 'Family Botting'
throughout the world during the past 200
years. As one of the objectives of this
website is to encourage Botting Family to
communicate worldwide and find out about
each other's Family History, and as Luke has
agreed to the publication of his email
address: luke1815@live.co.uk
you may wish to send him a greeting from
your part of the Botting World, and to share
with him a little news about yourself and
your antecedants].

At Shalford Mill near
Guildford in Surrey, owned by the National
Trust, we have a sack with the initials
'T and F Botting'. I know something about
Frederick and Thomas. They were brothers born in
1834 and 1835. Thomas had, I believe nine
children, though Frederick never married.
We would love to have a photo of these men and
their familiies to display in the Mill, and /
or the last leaseholder - Henry Botting,
corn merchant of 96 High Street, Guildford,
whose son Rupert Ludlow is described in the 1901
Census as 'miller's assistant'.
Can anyone help?
Please reply through contact us and the

My great great grandfather
was Henry Botting born in Nuthurst Sussex in 1818,
he was married to Ann Skinner in 1840 in Reigate
and they then lived in Nutfield in Surrey. I can't
find his parents or any siblings. Does anyone have
any clues?
They had 5 children, one of whom was Frances
(Fanny), who was my great grandmother, born in
1842 in Nutfield. She had two illegitimate
children before she married my great grandfather
David Austin in 1877. The two children were both
Botting, George, born in 1869, and Clara, born in
1874. I have information on Clara, but not on
George, who I believe fought in the Boer War and
then moved to Swaziland. Does anyone know anything
else about him? Many thanks! |

I'm trying to find out

grandparents. He was James BOTTING a blacksmith in
Godstone, born Worth, Sussex in 1781. He married

they had 8 children. I can't find a record of this
marriage or any possible previous marriages.

Many years ago my mother,
for an unusual xmas present for my father, named
Frederick John, ordered a plaque from researchers
unknown with a coat of arms and an expanation of
the origins of the name Botting. It was said to be

Can anybody shine any light on the truth of this
or supply an alternative origin and meaning.

family in Shorne, Kent. My grandmother, Florence
Irene May Botting, was born in Shorne in 1915.
Does anyone know more details of this branch of
the family? |
Anne Grimes |
UK |
My great grandmother was
Anne Payne whose first husband died and she then
married a Mr Botting (we believe his first name
was Arthur). They had two children - Lydia Laura
Botting (my grandmother) and John Botting (my
great uncle).
Lydia and John had about 7 half brothers and
sisters from Anne's first marriage, one of which
was called Florence Ann.
It is believed Lydia was born in Penge, South East
London on 13th September 1907. She married a James
Daniel O'Connell and had 6 children.
John married but never had any children.
This really is a long shot and I've never done
this before. But does this ring a bell with
anyone?

I believe that my mother's
grandmother was Mrs Botting nee Miss Haynes.
"Gran" was married to Benjamin Botting He died 9th
Nov 1881 aged 48. They had Robert Botting, Harriet
Botting, Allison Botting (she died in Feb 1952)
her son was W.G Wyld who was my mother's father.
So there is only a small link by marriage, but
thought it might be of interest. |

My Botting line can be
traced reliably only so far as John Botting
b.1700/01 in Shipley, who married Mary Holland 17
Jul 1726 in Wisborough Green, and died 3 Jun 1786
in Shipley.
Opinions as to his parents are varied, and I'm
still looking for something credible - I'm not
aware of any siblings, so a Shipley couple married
1699/1700 might look promising.
Is anyone else chasing the same problem?

My 6xgt grandfather was
Richard Botting (Botten) who married Elizabeth
Boorer in 1727 at Betchworth Surrey. I can trace
the son Samuel Botting's family from 1727 to date
but where did this Richard (I have not found the
other sons John, Richard, Thomas & David)come
from he was not baptised in Betchworth Surrey.
A possible I have found in West Grinstead baptised
1702. In my researches I came across Hugh who had
Hammerwood House & his will. I found various
documents which showed his line of Bottings went
to Cowden. I also found an ironworker John Botting
on the iron weald web site who came from France.

Hi I'm very pleased to have
found this website.
I've been researching my family history on and off
for 10 yeard. My maternal Grandfather was Charles
Albert Botting who was born in Hove East Sussex
and married Jessica Tomlins. Charles' father was
Harry Botting born 1871 in Worthing, he married
Catherine Green and his father was Henry
Botting. As far as I can find out, Henry was Henry
Wheatland Botting born1846 Washington Sussex who
married Eliza Nicholls, and his father was John
Botting 1813 who married Mary Wheatland;but I'm
not sure of that. If that is correct then I can
trace the Bottings back to William and Mary
Botting 1597 of Slaugham.
If anyone out there can help I'd be delighted. I
live in Kent, and my mother Elizabeth Botting
lived in Hove much of her young life. We've
visited Washington/Ashington and would love to
meet other Bottings. |

I am currently researching
all the names recorded on the Banstead War
Memorial in Surrey and one name is that of E H
Botting. I believe him to be Eric Harold Botting,
son of Henry Leslie and Primrose Botting, of
Seaford, Sussex; Husband of Margaret G. E.
Botting, of Hornchurch, Essex.
I list below the record from the Commonwealth War
Graves Commission.
If anyone has any information about this Botting,
please do get in touch. All my findings are being
published on www.bansteadhistory.com
which I am updating almost daily. If anyone has a
photogrph, that would be a real bonus.
There is also an E E Botting listed on the Epsom
War Memorial who may or may not be the same man. I
am finding that there are many many mistakes on
the memorial I am researching. I can provide
pictures of both inscriptions if you would like me
to do so.

My g.grandmother Emily
Mary Botting was born 1845 in St Marylebone,
London of Henry 1814- 73 and Mary. He was born in
Storrington, Sussex of Henry and Sarah. Is this
Henry the son Edward and Sarah Grinstead? Their
son Henry was born in 1766 and could also have
married Ann Heaseman, Ann Waller, or Ann Stanford.
I have looked at original records and all the
wills I can find, but have found no definitive
answer. Can anyone help? About 10 Henries were
born in a small area of Sussex in the mid and late
19th century. Has any one had any luck in
distinguishing one from the other? Any
clarification would be wonderful. |

There was a substantial
cluster of Bottings around West Grinstead in
Sussex in the period 1600-1900. My Botting
ancestors came from the village of Alfold on the
Surrey/Sussex borders a few miles north of this
main concentration of Bottings. It seems most if
not all Bottings in Alfold were from our branch of
the family which can be traced back to Francis
Botting born in 1725 in Alfold.
My Gt Gt Grandfather was Moses Botting who was
born in 1818 in Alfold. He raised his family in
Ewhurst over the border in Surrey where there
appears to have been two or three Botting family
groups in the mid 1800's. Our branch continued to
migrate a few miles north with each generation, my
Gt Grandfather raising his family in Ashtead and
my Grandfather being associated with Epsom. Others
of the family lived in and around the villages of
Fetcham and Bookham.
By the early 1900's Mose's descendants were
scattered over most of Surrey. After the end of
WW1 my Grandfather had migrated to Brighton,
Sussex where he met and married my Grandmother.
Our branch of Bottings remained in the Brighton
area and my Mother still lives there as well as a
few other close relatives. Others of us have moved
away and colonised other parts of the UK.
If anyone has Botting relatives they can trace to
Alfold, Ewhurst, Leatherhead, Ashtead or Epsom I
should be interested to hear from them. There are
more than 400 names on the Botting branch of our
Tree so I may be able help other researchers.
I believe our Bottings were probably an offshoot
from the Bottings group to the South of Alfold and
would be very interested if anyone can provide a
link between these family groupings.
With our Brighton connections still very much
alive we would certainly be interested in any
proposed 2007 reunion in the town, or city as it
has now become. |

(1791-1873) and Elizabeth Jenner
(b.1792).ggparents John (1762-1849) &
Elizabeth Harwood (1760-1823), gggparents Edward
1728-1804) & Sarah Grinstead (1733-1814). The
line then goes back to William in 1597, but
pictures are getting unlikely then! I would be
very happy to be contacted by any family member
and share any information I have, but Russ B in NZ
already has most of it so it may be already
available. |

I would be very interested
in this possible reunion and/or more information
on the Botting family. I have only recently become
interested in the research of family trees and am
a real beginner!!
My Mum, Janet, is the daughter of Alfred John
Botting (born 30.6.08) who lived in Shorne, Kent
and we have started to record all of the
information we know of with regard to my Grandad's
brothers and extended family and would love to
know how these Bottings relate to those traced so
far.
Unfortunately my Grandad died in 1990, but I think
there are a few remaining relatives from this
generation although I haven't yet got around to
contacting them. |
