about

The purpose of this Website is:

  • To provide an international point of contact for all Botting descendants throughout the world
  • To create an awareness of information already documented
  • To offer help to those who want to establish links with other family members in furthering their own genealogical research
  • To include links to other websites of family members
  • To inform people of Botting ‘events’ that are being planned, and where to source information for these.

To provide an international point of contact for all Botting descendants throughout the world.
Members of the Botting family are now spread throughout the United Kingdom and the world. A number of these wish to re-establish links with their family or explore their family roots. There are many challenges involved in this.
One is seeking to trace the descendants of the many Botting daughters in every generation. Their descendants do not carry the ‘Botting’ surname* but they are part of the family. Another complication is that the surname has been spelt is several ways, such as ‘Bottin’, ‘Bottinga’. One family line had the surname ‘Botten’ up until the 1820’s and ‘Botting’ thereafter. This also creates problems in tracking family roots.
Having an international point of contact will help re-unite the global family.

To create an awareness of information already documented.
While in England on Sabbatical in 2005 Des Botting from New Zealand contacted a number of Bottings in the United Kingdom to see if they were connected with the Australian and New Zealand branches of the family. Of those visited some had done considerable research into their particular branch of the family and could trace their line back several generations, some as far back as 1597. Others, although interested in finding out more, could only go back a generation or two.
A database of family members is now being compiled and is growing virtually daily as more and more information comes to hand. Others have had a personal interest in particular aspects of the family history. For example, one member has researched all the ‘Bottings’ who died in World War I.
Genealogical research can be both time-consuming and costly. These sources of information may well provide the answers sought by those carrying out research into their branch of the family, or at least make them aware of what work has been done in that area.

To offer help to those who want to establish links with other family members in furthering their own genealogical research.
It is not only learning of what has been researched already, but also knowing how to go about furthering that research, where to look for information, the sources that are free and those that have a cost attached to them, can be very helpful to those who are new to genealogical research. A list of these is included under Links.

To include links to other websites of family members
A number of family members have their own websites. These will contain information that you are welcome to browse and will extend your knowledge of others within the global Botting family.
These can also be accessed under Links.

To inform people of Botting ‘events’ that are being planned, and where to source information for these.
From time to time Reunions and other Botting family gatherings are held in different parts of the world. What can often happen is that people hear about the event after it has taken place.
This website will provide information about such events, when and where they are being held and who to contact for further information.

*There is at least one exception. In New Zealand a Botting married a Botting, and there may well be others, but such occasions are very rare.
